Reusing offcuts: when it pays off and when it does not
Consistently reusing offcuts saves a median of 5.5 percentage points of material across 500 rooms – more than any grid optimisation. But the median hides the actual answer: in 143 of the 500 rooms, almost every third, it saves exactly zero tiles. In 137 rooms, by contrast, at least five, up to 27 at most. So it is not "usually a little" – it is rarely nothing and often a lot. This article tells you which group your room is in.

The rule: does it fit twice on one tile?
An offcut is only reusable if a second one fits alongside it on the same tile – including the saw kerf. With 60 cm tiles that means border strips under about 29 cm can be paired, strips over 30 cm never. Our example room measures 3.20 × 2.60 m and leaves around 18.5 cm on both axes: 30 tiles become 25 because three of them yield two strips each.

What matters in practice
The plan turns theory into a work instruction
Reusing offcuts does not mean rummaging through the waste pile. It means knowing in advance which tile gets divided for what. The cutting plan shows every purchased tile as a bar with the pieces cut from it. Without that plan the idea usually ends with you failing to find the right offcut exactly when you need it.
Few tiles saved, many percent saved
The numbers flip with format: with small formats you save a median of five tiles but only 3.7 percentage points. With large formats it is the reverse – a median of one tile, but 6.5 percentage points. The reason is the value per piece. For the question "is the effort worth it?" what counts is not the number of pieces but what one piece costs.
When it does not pay off
Three cases where you can save yourself the effort: if the border strips are wider than half a tile, a second one never fits alongside. If the room has only a few cuts, we are talking about one or two tiles. And if you lay diagonally or in herringbone, you get triangles instead of strips – there is no clean pairing for those. In these cases the honest answer is: order normally.

The condition for any reuse
There is exactly one rule from which everything else follows: two offcuts must fit side by side on one tile, saw kerf included. If they do not, the effort achieves nothing.
- With 60 cm tiles: border strips under about 29 cm can be paired
- Almost every third room saves zero tiles – that is normal
- Large formats save few pieces but many percentage points
- With diagonal and herringbone, reuse falls away entirely
How to proceed
1. Look at the border widths
Check whether the offcut strips are narrower than half a tile.
2. Switch on reuse
Compare the purchase quantity with and without reuse and assess the difference.
3. Take the plan along
Without the cutting plan you will not find the right offcut on site.

Common questions
Is it worth reusing tile offcuts?
It depends on the room. Across 500 rooms it was a median of 5.5 percentage points less material, but exactly zero tiles in 143 rooms. What decides it is whether two border strips fit side by side on one tile – with a 60 cm format, strips under about 29 cm.
Why does the tool calculate more conservatively than I could cut?
Because it only pairs clean rectangular strips, deducts the saw kerf, ignores offcuts that are too small and limits the number of visible cut edges. The quantity shown is therefore always sufficient – with patience and luck you have some headroom upwards, and never a shortfall downwards.
Does this work with herringbone or diagonal too?
Hardly. These patterns produce triangles and angled remnants instead of straight strips, and there is no reliable pairing for those. With rotated grids the calculation therefore deliberately shows no saving rather than promising one that does not materialise on site.
Should I keep offcuts anyway?
Yes, but for a different reason: later repairs. In three years you can replace a cracked tile from your own leftovers without trouble, from a new batch never in the same shade. Half a pack in the basement is the cheapest insurance in the whole project.
What does a room look like where offcuts really pay off?
In the "reusing offcuts" example project above, 24 full tiles meet 24 cuts – a utility room of 3.70 × 2.90 m in a 60 × 60 format. With offcut reuse switched on, 10 of the 48 tiles disappear. The pattern behind it: many cuts of a similar width can be taken in pairs from one tile. Where cut widths vary a lot, or with herringbone, the effect stays small.
